Just a final comment on the missile site… It really was not a desirable place for people to be stationed. Being located in the Everglades, the heat, humidity and the mosquitos were a nightmare. Soldiers main tasks would be to run repetitive drills to set up the missles or they would be charged with walking a dog around the perimeter of the site. Not much daily diversity. Lane thought it was fun to learn that the soldiers would go into town and buy cheap cars and then hold races at the site. When done racing, they would drive the cars into the neighboring swamp to sink them. When they decommissioned the site and drained the surrounding areas, they found all the cars!
